What to know about public transport & city cards in Barcelona

Barcelona's public transport is run by TMB: the metro, buses and the connection to the Montjuïc cable car. Visitors can choose the Hola Barcelona Travel Card valid for 2 to 5 days, T-Casual multi-trip cards, and the Barcelona Card that bundles transport with sightseeing entries. This page compares the starting prices the portals charge for these passes.

The maths is simple: a single metro ticket costs about 2.65 euros. From the third or fourth ride of the day onwards, the Hola Barcelona Travel Card is cheaper. From two full days with sightseeing, the Barcelona Card often wins because entry to attractions and transport are bundled.

Mind the validity: the Hola Barcelona Travel Card runs by the hour from first use, not by calendar day. A 48-hour card first validated on Friday at 2 pm is valid until Sunday at 2 pm – a real advantage when you arrive late in the day.

For the trip from El Prat Airport into the city: the Aerobús runs directly to Plaça Catalunya and needs its own ticket that is not included in the Hola Barcelona Travel Card. Alternatively, metro line L9 Sud and Rodalies commuter trains serve the airport, where the regular TMB zone fare applies.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a metro ticket in Barcelona?
A single ticket is around 2.65 euros. Multi-trip cards and time passes such as the Hola Barcelona Travel Card work out cheaper per ride; the current starting prices from the portals are listed with each offer on this page.
Is the Hola Barcelona Travel Card valid to El Prat Airport?
No, the Aerobús needs its own ticket. Metro line L9 Sud to the airport, however, is covered by the regular TMB zone fare and can partly be combined with the Travel Card.
Is the Barcelona Card worth it?
It pays off if you visit at least one or two paid sights a day and use public transport as well. For a pure sightseeing day without entries, a time pass is usually cheaper.
Do I need a separate ticket for the Montjuïc cable car?
Yes, the funicular and the aerial cable car up to Montjuïc are standalone attractions with their own ticket and are not automatically included in the TMB transport fare.
